Is ceramic acceptable for urns?

Absolutely. Ceramic is a tried and tested option for urns. There are multiple reasons why ceramic is a primary material when artisans create cremation urns for ashes.

Durability

Ceramic is a very scratch resistant material, which means is nice to know while handling the urn. Ceramic urns have been used to store ashes for a long time, having been a popular choice in both Ancient Greece and ancient Rome. This means skilled artisans know a lot about the material, and ceramic urns have withstood the test of time.

Aesthetic appeal and variety

Another reason ceramic urns are a popular choice is that the material allows for great variety in design. This makes it easier to find the urn that is best suited for your loved one. We offer a variety of urn, including more traditional designs. The great benefit of using ceramic urns for ashes is that it allows for a more modern and contemporary look, such as urns with LED lights and urns depicting one of the constellations.

Keep in mind: ceramic is more brittle than stone

While ceramic is a very durable and scratch resistant material, its structure means it is not perfectly protected against shattering. If a ceramic urn is dropped from a few feet, chances are that it may break.

If you are planning on keeping the urn in a room with kids and/or pets, a ceramic urn might not be the most suitable option unless you have a safe space to place it. In those cases, consider a stone urnstainless steel urn, or a wooden urn.

How long do ceramic urns last?

Humanity has been creating ceramic pottery such as urns for thousands of centuries. Some of the oldest known ceramics have been dated to be at least 2300 years old! That means it’s safe to say that, in the right circumstances, ceramic urns can last for a remarkably long time.

Can ceramic urns be buried?

Under the right conditions, a ceramic urn can be buried. However, since the main purpose of these urns is to be displayed in a home or in a columbarium (urn wall), other materials might be more appropriate. For example, urns made of granite, stainless steel or bronze urns could be a more suitable for choice.

If you’d prefer a ceramic urn which can be buried, it should be suitable for storage outside. Check the ‘Suitable for’ filter, or check the ‘suitable for’ attribute in the product description. Additionally, take the following into account:

  • The urn should be fired at high temperatures (> 1000 °C or > 1800 °F) to ensure it is frost-proof.
  • It is highly advisable to also utilize a so-called “ash bag” within the urn. This improves the longevity of the urn. In the scenario that the urn does crack, the bag protects the ashes from any splinters.
  • Lastly, it is important to consider that the contents of the ceramic urn will likely coalesce and solidify when stored outside for longer periods of time.

How are ceramic urns sealed?

How a ceramic urns exactly seals, depends on the model. However, most urns have a lid on top that twists in. Additionally, a sealant is provided. If you wish to seal the urn, you can apply the sealant to the lid and then securely attach it to the urn. After about a day (24 hours), the sealant is dry.

Make sure to check the instructions on the sealant on how to use it.
